100lbs Lost & Still Going!

In March, someone had asked me if I was ready to start working out.  As someone who has been overweight their whole life, and at 455 lbs at the time, I had wanted to do something about my weight and health for quite awhile.  When I thought about answering that question, I finally decided to be honest with myself and put aside all the excuses, and admitted to myself that I had no reason not to.  So I started off slowly, walking on the treadmill.  After about three months, I had reached the extent of my fitness knowledge I had acquired 20 years ago in the square dancing classes I had taken in High School Phys Ed (I like the easy classes).  To keep trying to challenge myself and moving forward, it was time to think about a trainer.  I was a bit hesitant, partly because I have a hard time asking for help, and partly because doing anything physically active is foreign to me and I feel awkward.  I wasn't sure what to expect working with a trainer.  I have been surprised with what I have been pushed to do that I did not think I could do or would not have even tried on my own.  What surprised me more was that has also been a little bit fun, which I wasn't expecting at all.  I would suggest to anyone who was considering training to keep in mind that you get what you put into it.  If you put 100% into it with a positive attitude, your trainer will match every bit of it and you'll get to where you want to be that much stronger.  Hopefully along the way, your trainer's passion and love of fitness will rub off on you no matter what your goal is.  So far, I have lost 80lbs and am still training twice per week and coming into Oasis six days a week.  -Marina Mondello

I had always struggled with my weight.  I've lost and gained numerous times.  It wasn't until I got married and had two children that my weight ballooned to a number that seemed impossible to get away from.  I've spent the last ten years knowing I needed to change, but always putting it off until Monday and then failing by Tuesday.
I joined Oasis in hopes of finding a gym that was comfortable for my children and me.  I wanted to be a good example to them, and show them what a healthy lifestyle truly should look like.  I joined a Mission SlimPossible team in hopes of finding help.  Rita began my journey with me, surprising me with what I was physically able to do.  The stairs at home got me out of breath, but in short order I could forge my way through a 45 minute workout.
Then life changed.
A couple weeks into the program, we were faced with a challenge.  I had a breast cancer scare, and while waiting the weekend for biopsy results, my husband and I had a lot of time to reflect on the things we could control in life.  I made a promise that if the results from the tumors were benign, I wouldn't hope to be healthy, I would make it happen.  I was blessed with good news, and since then, there wasn't a doubt of what I needed to do.
Since then, I finished Mission SlimPossible with Rita and my Jade team. Realizing that I still needed support, I began working with my hope and inspiration, Megan.  She has made me realize that I am more capable than I thought.  She pushes me outside my comfort zone, which is a road I wouldn't travel by myself.  Megan keeps my accountable.  I weigh in with her every Tuesday.  She is my cheerleader.  When we see improvements, she dances with me and encourages me.  She has helped me go farther than I thought I could, and makes it enjoyable, laughing all the way.
I have also recently joined the semi-private training, meeting 2 days per week for 30 minutes with 4 other members and Oasis trainer, Liz. I've tried to do this so many times by myself- I'd lose some weight and gain it back with a few more pounds.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with admitting extra support is needed.  It's brave and being honest with yourself.  I'm so thankful I finally did.

My road is still long ahead, but at least it is paved and my navigator Megan is with me- I know where I'm going and how to get there.  I've lost 58 pounds since my highest, and over 40 since I began at Oasis in June. My husband and I have  lost more than 100 pounds together!  I have 80 some pounds left to go, and with Megan by my side, I look forward to a healthier lifestyle, running in races, and being that example I want my children, Luke and Molly, to live their lives by.  There is a wonderful quote I'd love to leave you with.  It is something I've learned through personal training at Oasis.

"Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."-Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh

I've been brave and asked for help, my body is stronger and so much more capable, and I've finally learned how to smartly live my life.  Thank you so much to the warm and encouraging staff at Oasis, Rita for giving me the strength to begin my journey, my mom for supporting me and being my example, and to Megan for helping me work my way to the individual I have only dreamed I could be.   -Jill Vaupell

I've been a member since the very beginning.  I used to spend a lot of time in the 6am classes, but then I got a new job that started at 6:30.  It wasn't until last August that I made the commitment to work out after work (at 3:00), but I just wasn't seeing the results I wanted.  When a personal training specials in February was offered, I thought I would give it a try.

Megan has been my trainer since then.  At first, I was only working with her every other week, but now it's weekly and I just signed up for 12 more sessions. I have a lot of "fun" (as she calls it" with Megan-I have never worked so hard in my life!  And I'm always surprised when I realize I really am strong enough to do what she asks of me.  We joke around, mostly because I love to hear her laugh ring out through the gym.  But she is always professional in her happy, upbeat way.  I want to work hard for her; my half hour with Megan is one of the highlights of my week.

So here's my success story: I have a pair of white denim shorts that I couldn't take with me on my vacation to Florida in February-they were way too tight.  Yesterday, I wore them out of Oasis and I had room in the waistband!  And they were out-of-the-dryer tight, too!

I feel I owe this success to Megan, a trainer who pushes me hard, doesn't let me quit, cheers my successes, laughs at my jokes, inspires and challenges me, ad makes me strong.  You have a real gem in that girl.  Sh is simply the best.  Thanks, Sally. And thanks, Megan! -Alaine Rapp

I joined Oasis in January after complaining to my friend about being stuck inside with three young kids during the worst winter in years... It was depressing, and I wasn't feeling good about myself.  My friend mentioned she had just joined Oasis. They have babysitting for kids under 8, its small, casual, and for women of ALL fitness levels. I was willing to try just to get out of the house. So I joined on a whim and I haven't felt better in years! After buying a "quick start" package, Dina, worked with me to come up with attainable fitness goals and get me comfortable with the gym. I enjoyed it so much that I bought a full personal training package. My schedule is busy with kids so setting appointments fits best with my calendar and holds me accountable for actually showing up rather than just thinking about going. I've been working with Dina, Megan and Annie on a rotating basis. Its a nice variety. These ladies don't mess around!!! They're tough! I've worked with other trainers most recently on vacation in Florida so as not to lose steam. They were not nearly as tough on me. I definitely have been getting my money's worth with these girls and I feel a huge sense of accomplishment after each session. Plus they remind me about healthy eating which is another important part of feeling good. Between the other members, the employees and the trainers I feel confident and can exercise without any judgement or intimidation... Nothing but support from everyone at Oasis! ---Anne McFadden
