With the holidays just around the corner, you are probably planning dinners, cookie exchanges, and get togethers with friends and family. The next 2 months starting at Halloween are a whirlwind of food and drink which consistently adds pounds and inches.
As a trainer, I struggle with the same flux of motivation and willpower struggles as everyone. It's not that we lack willpower - it's more like I run out of it. As the days get shorter, I think my motivation gets shorter too. I would much rather stay in bed in the morning than work out. And I'd rather have a glass of wine with friends than run after work.
Which is why I work with a Personal Trainer. Personal training is an investment in my health and well-being. I work with a trainer for the same reasons everyone works with a trainer. Sure, I can design workouts and know what I should be doing, but sometimes we all need a little help. Following are some of my reasons for working with a Personal Trainer:
Motivation – Personal trainers wear many hats, serving not only as coach, but as an educator, confidant, role model and a major source of motivation and encouragement as well. If he wasn't waiting for me in the morning, it would be really hard to get out of bed.
Consistency – Scheduling regular appointments with a personal trainer helps eliminate any excuses you might come up with for not exercising. Because I have a standing appointment and know that if I miss my appointment, my trainer might not be able to see me again that week, I make it a point to get to my appointment on time ready to work out.
Safety – Unsure about how to use the chest press machine at the gym or how to perform walking lunges without hurting your knees? A personal trainer will show you how to exercise safely (including which exercises to avoid) and instruct you on the proper and safe use of exercise equipment. I always want to make sure my butt is down when I'm doing plank. Although I don't like the thought of my trainer looking at my butt, I do want him to tell me my form is right.
Individualized Instruction – What works for one person, may not work for another when it comes to choosing an exercise program. A personal trainer will develop the most effective program for you based on your fitness evaluation results and personal goals. Beginners in particular benefit from instruction on how to perform specific exercises and program planning. As your trainer gets to know you and your comfort level, she will push you to lift more weights or try a different exercise that you wouldn't do on your own.
Effective Workouts – Today's hectic lifestyles mean you don't have time to waste on ineffective exercise routines. Personal trainers help maximize your time by providing workouts designed to meet your goals quickly and efficiently. If you're like me, heading to the gym on your own means 30 minutes on the treadmill. My trainer makes sure I get all my strength workouts in too!
Injury Rehabilitation – Injuries and accidents can prevent you from participating in your favorite activities. An experienced personal trainer can make the road to recovery a smooth one by recommending exercises that emphasize overall muscular balance to prevent future injuries. I've been battling a nagging pain for a while due to running. Working with my trainer, we found an imbalance and have been working to correct it. This should not only alleviate the injury but help my running improve.
Special-needs Training – Research confirms that individuals with health challenges such as diabetes, asthma, osteoporosis or heart disease benefit greatly from regular physical activity. These conditions, however, can make exercising safely a challenge. Many personal trainers are experienced in designing programs that address the special needs of these and other conditions. Personally I tend to get light headed when I'm working out. My trainer is able to see when I'm struggling and encourage a break, water, or another exercise.
Ego Boost – It's a fact-feeling good makes you look good, and vice versa. Not only can your personal trainer help you achieve your health and fitness goals, they provide you with positive feedback on your performance and bolster your confidence to take on new challenges. And it's really cool to tell your friends that you have a personal trainer!
